Avocado is one of the most popular ingredients in brunch menus. Think about it, how many brunch menus do you see that do not contain avocado. Avocados haven’t always been as popular as they are nowadays though.

A century ago, most people would not be able to even recognize what an avocado was. Here’s a fun fact, avocados had a completely different name, ‘āhuacatl’. This name came from the Aztecs in 500 BC. Just seeing the name of this fruit makes it clear why it was not very popular. It was very hard to pronounce, which naturally makes it less appealing.

In the early 1900s, a marketing decision was made by farmers to change the name of this fruit to make it more popular. One of the earlier suggestions for the name change was Alligator Pear. This name was voted against due to it being deemed as not appealing. The name Avocado was decided on. Unfortunately, just changing the name was not enough.

Fast forward a couple of decades to the 1980s. The world saw a new campaign promoting low-fat dietary trends. Unfortunately sales of the avocado further plummeted casting this fruit as a high-fat product. Knowledge of the benefits of avocado and the healthy fat properties were not well-known at the time.

In the 1990s, the California Avocado Commission realised that something had to be done. A new mascot was introduced (‘Mr. Ripe Guy’) to educate the public about the great properties of avocados. Furthermore, during the Super Bowl, the marketing firm hired came up with a strategy to get NFL players to promote the idea of the “Guacamole Bowl”.

This changed everything for avocado. Sales were boosted and guacamole became a very popular dip. As it turns out, guacamole is still a very popular dip during Super Bowl Sunday. Americans eat over 100 million pounds of avocados per year on Super Bowl Sunday alone. From a fruit that was struggling to boost sales, to one of the most popular fruits eaten with savoury items. Pretty incredible.

So, what exactly made the avocado the perfect snack? The possibilities are endless. From an avocado smoothie, to plain with a pinch of salt, to avocado toast and even to a dip, there are countless ways to reap the benefits of avocados. Mostly popular due to healthy fat, dietary fibre and a great selection of vitamins and minerals such as B6, C, E, K, potassium, magnesium and pantothenic acid. Great source of beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids and lutein.

Avocados are best eaten ripe, especially if you are mashing up for that avocado toast you want to prepare for yourself. An unripened avocado is not enjoyable to eat and is too hard. Unfortunately ripened avocados are twice the price of unripened and go bad rather quickly.

This is why most of the time I prefer to use frozen avocados. I can just get out a bag and use the right amount without risking throwing away unused avocado after a few days whilst waiting for it to ripen, only to forget its existence in my fridge.

I have included some recipes for avocado toast in this article. For all of these I make use of Asiago frozen avocado i got from Whatsinstore. I find frozen avocado works well, and with minimal waste.

For your avocado toast you will obviously need to toast some pieces of bread until golden brown. To make the avocado paste, simply put frozen avocado in a food processor until a paste is formed. I like not to blend too much so I still have some small chunks which I find add some very welcome solid texture.

Spread avocado paste on each of the slices of bread. Top each of the pieces of toast with a generous amount of this avocado paste. As we said there are a variety of toppings to put on your avocado toast. These are up to you but we suggest using a range of different toppings with a variety of colours. Here are six of our favourite avocado toast options we prepared recently:

  • Scrambled egg and mushrooms
  • Salmon and red onion
  • Cherry Tomatoes, Mozzarella balls and balsamic vinegar
  • Spinach leaves and cucumber
  • Greek Feta Cheese, olives and red pepper
  • Poached egg and chives

We are sure you will love these avocado toast options. They are delicious, varied and colourful and, let’s face it, you could be the worst of cooks and still make a really mean avocado toast. Perfect brunch idea to entertain and even great as a snack for guests!
