Milkshakes became a source of wonder and lust sometime in the middle of last century, when US culture became so dominant and enticing with the advent of television. The milkshake was the most important and evocative drink of the American diner, if not necessarily the most popular. With blenders becoming commonplace in the last decades, emulating the iconic drink at our homes became easy.

Milkshakes are quintessentially the thing to serve, especially with American foods such as burgers and fries (which sort of feels like like having a dessert with a main course, but not exactly).

Milkshakes are the classic creamy combination of milk and ice-cream. It’s probably why everyone loves them. It’s just a matter of which flavour you prefer. Besides, they’re simple to make, all you need is a few ingredients and a blender.

Oreo cookies are the worlds most famous sandwich cookies and quintessentially American. They can be dunk in milk or enjoyed as they are. They are actually not the most original of their type, but rather the later or copied version of the ‘hydrox’ cookies. Did you know you can actually customize your Oreo cookies!?

Ingredients (Serves 2):

6 classic Oreo cookies (or similar sandwich biscuits)
1 cup milk of choice
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 scoops vanilla Ice Cream (For lower calories replace with one frozen banana)
1/2 tbsp white or milk chocolate spread (omit for lower calories)
Toppings:
1 tbsp chocolate or caramel syrup/sauce
1 crushed Oreo for topping
Whipped cream
Desiccated coconuts (optional)

Instructions:

Add all ingredients except for the toppings into a blender. You can can us whatever kind of milk you like for this recipe. I find whole milk to give the most creamy taste, but you can easily opt for skimmed if you are keen on a low calories version.

Blend on low, I personally don’t get too vigorous with the blending so I get to find some Oreo chunks at the end of it. Pour into your tall glasses and top with whipped cream.

Crush the remaining Oreo cookies for the garnish by placing them in a zip-close plastic bag and pounding on them a few times with a rolling pin. Drizzle some syrup and add a sprinkle of desiccated coconuts. Pop a straw in and there you have it!

Here’s an additional recipe tip! Summer is approaching and many would like to indulge in such a delicious treat, however with a bit less calories. The question often arises – how do you make a such a milkshake without ice cream? Easy, i would suggest using frozen bananas or yoghurt instead of ice cream. The flavor will be a little different, but it will still be delicious!
