The origins of the Pecan Pie are actually rooted from an American background although the ‘pecan’ nut name comes from the French word ‘pacane’ which is why it has often been confused as a French delicacy. The original was also traditionally made from Karo Syrup, but more modern recipes substitute this with brown sugar for convenience of ingredients. This sweetness is the reason why such a pie is often referred to as a sugar pie.
